The challenge

Here you'll find all data relevant to the challenge in three parts: the challenge itself (what is it about), the organization of the challenge and some additional remarks. Please read it all.
We hope we have explained everything clearly. If despite our best efforts you do have a question, please contact us, as we are always willing to help.

Challenge
A fascinating scene with a lot of potential is the Doctor’s “deathbed confession” scene from Renaissance Man. Take a look at a clip of his confession and read the transcript by Jim Wright if you want to refresh your memory.
The wonderful, intelligent and sweet but very Borg Seven leaves the larger-than-life hologram hanging after his confession of love… Poor man. Someone should help him recover, or more specifically, Seven should help him!

The challenge is to write a J/7 story or make a J/7 music video in which the doctor gets some consolation, in which Seven fully realizes the importance of the EMH’s confession, and in which, in one way or another, Janeway and Seven realize they love each other. What happens after that is up to you…

Length
Free. That means it can go from Haiku, all the way to novel and/or feature length movie (hehehe).

Talent
Only required if you want to win. But if you've never written any J/7 before, this is your chance! You will, by default, at least have us as adoring fans, because we will love you forever for accepting the challenge. We promise we will even adore a fic like:

SCENE 1 Sickbay
Seven: Your admission of love is very flattering Doctor.
The Doctor: Oooh Seven, that makes me feel like a million bucks!

SCENE 2 Janeway’s quarters
Janeway: May I call you Annika, sweetie darling?
Seven: No. But you may call me Patricia.
THE END

Organization
- Should you accept the challenge, your story, poem, script or photo story has to be emailed to us on January 25, 2004 at the latest. If your entry is a music video, contact us when you're ready to submit it, but before the 25th. Please make sure all entries are properly rated and disclaimed.
[Yes, the closing date has been extended due to the holidays. It came to our attention, that people have been completely distracted by the festivities or would not be back at work (& their internet access) in time to submit.]

- Voting will start four days later on January 29, 2004 and will last until February 15th before the results are published and the winner gets applauded, kissed and buried in prizes.

- There will be NO categories. To prevent readers/viewers having to vote in a category with only one entry, all entries will be put together.

- Please format your contribution as either a Word document, an HTML-page or, if applicable, make sure it has a common image extension such as .bmp .jpg .jpeg .gif. For music video's please stick to .rm .mov .wmv.

- Any entry submitted to the challenge will be exlusive to our site for the duration of the challenge. After the winners of the poll and the jury prize have been announced you can place your story anywhere you like, but it will also remain available on the SOC site. Copyrights which don't belong to Paramount/Viacom, belong to the creator of the piece.
By entering SOC you agree with these conditions.

Determination of the winner
The winner will be chosen by you, by voting for your favorite creative work. The winner of the jury prize will be determined by a jury of five members of the J/7 fandom. All stories entered in the challenge are eligible for the jury prize provided they:
- did not top the poll;
- were not entered by a member of the jury;
- have, in the jury's opinion, something special to recommend them.
Want to be a jury member? Send us a message if you think you could be part of an impartial and fair jury.
People who have volunteered and are now official jury members: AnnikaHansen7of9, LZClotho, Raspy, Raven_voy and Xnedrabourne. The jury is now complete!

Prizes
The prize for the best piece of fan fiction consists of three things:
1. A full flash designed animation with music track that can be from any episode focusing on any Voyager character you want, set to the music of your choice! Or, you can get singing monkeys spelling your name with noodles.
Either way the animation will be created by Trek 4of9 and if you haven't seen her beautiful work yet, here is your chance: The Imperfection Mix & slightly unconventional on this site but to give you a better taste an STG-1 Mix.

2. The winner gets an EMH/J/7 music video by Xnedrabourne. And when we say you get it that is exactly what we mean. You will own it, it will have your name on it and it will contain the Doctor’s deathbed confession as an eternal reminder to you winning this challenge. We trust you have all seen her beautiful Turn Back Time, if not, check it out now, so you'll know what to expect.

3. Kate Shadow, Orione and An B. Cay take up a counterchallenge from the winner to write a J/7 story for whatever challenge the winner sets. So that goes from "bedtime story for two year olds" all the way to full smut. You can give them any storyline, scene to start from, story outcome, plot gimmick, etc. imaginable. The only thing not allowed is to set the length of the story.
So if you want to make them squirm and exclaim things Seven never knew existed with only pleasant repercussions to look forward to: Accept the challenge!

The jury prize is a very special treat indeed:
A manipulated picture to fit your piece of fan fiction, custom made by Besof4! We're sure you all know her stylish and seductive work, but for an example visit Bailey B's site which Besof4 created.

Any piece of fan fiction entered in this challenge by Commander Stocking or one of the Gutter Girls will be disqualified, which means they cannot win any of the prizes. This will however not deter them from entering.

Every person who enters the contest receives the following memento:
An image of a Voyager crewmember telling everyone who visits that your piece of fan fiction is fabulous. This can be placed next to your story or the link to your music video.

If you have any questions, shoot.

Diversity in creativity
Although it might be clear already, we like to state explicitly:
In true Starfleet tradition *cough cough* we at SOC like to support the different ways in which J/7-ers express their love for Voyager.
Since recent months have shown an explosively growing J/7 music video scene, we have decided this challenge is not only open for written stories and scripts but also for music video's. In addition, mostly because of our own fondness for the genre, SOC also accepts photo stories, i.e. a story put together from captioned pictures.
We consider all this to be fan fiction, fiction created by fans!
We realize that both video makers and people who'll make a photo story will have more difficulty in sticking to the challenge, they have to work with what actually happened on Star Trek: Voyager. Try to stick to the gist of it!

Extra (free!) tip
If you want someone to beta read your story, there's a list of people who would be willing to beta read on LZClotho's site.

So in short
- Accept the challenge. Right a wrong. Give the Doctor some peace of mind, and Janeway a piece of Seven.
- Win the music video, the flash animation and the chance to publicly humiliate Kate Shadow, Orione and An B. Cay by setting an impossible or otherwise brilliant challenge.
- Go out and kiss a stranger (preferably a tall, blonde stranger with an implant above her left eye).

Looking forward to your contribution!
